Is Atlanta poised to become the Hollywood of the South?

Just last week, P3 Update, a 25-year old, internationally-distributed production trade magazine, published a list of the top 10 most desirable film production locations in the world — and Georgia was listed as #3!   Only the obvious California (home of Hollywood) and Connecticut (with its close proximity to New York City) rank ahead of our great southern state.   That’s incredible!

So we know what makes Atlanta a great place to live and work, but what makes Georgia, and specifically Atlanta, such a great place to film?    The report identifies Atlanta’s varying visuals among the top reasons – and it’s true – our tall buildings and bustling downtown atmosphere, transitional suburban family homes and neighborhoods, and less-populated rural landscape are all within 60 miles of one another.    That accessible variety of backdrops allows filmmakers to address the locational needs of their films with ease.   Add to that our international airport, a growing production infrastructure, a few favorable tax credits and some southern hospitality and it’s hard to imagine why any great filmmaker wouldn’t want to come here.

It makes sense, then, that for the past year or so, celebrity sightings in Atlanta and all over Georgia have increased dramatically.   Recent reports have included Spike Lee, Denzel Washington, Vince Vaughn, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill and Ben Stiller.  Stiller, along with the cast of The Vampire Diaries (though separately we believe) were seen recently dining at Barcelona Wine Bar in the N. Highland Steel neighborhood.
