This time of year, it’s common to spend some time thinking about ways we can give back to the community. Last week, we told you about the importance and ease of giving blood. This week, we’ll talk to the pet lovers, who simply must check all that is happening at the Atlanta Humane Society. Whether you choose to volunteer, adopt or donate, there are so many ways to give to Atlanta’s furriest residents.
First, a little history. The Atlanta Humane Society, founded in 1873, is the oldest private charitable organization in Atlanta. Originally located on Marietta Street, the Humane Society has been at its Howell Mill Rd. location (about a mile from Apex West Midtown) since the 1930s.
The mission of the Atlanta Humane Society is to “prevent neglect, abuse, cruelty and exploitation of animals and to assure that their interests and well-being are fully, effectively and humanely protected by an aware and caring society.” It’s a tall order, but with help from a dedicated staff, donors and volunteers like you, we can make it happen.
So let’s jump to that. What can YOU do to support the Atlanta Humane Society? There are so many options. You can help walk and socialize the animals before they are adopted. You can foster pets who are not ready to be adopted. You can handle more administrative tasks like processing paperwork for incoming animals or helping with the AHS social media sites. Here’s the complete list of volunteer opportunities.
If you have the means, donations are always welcome and appreciated. And, finally, if you are ready to commit to providing a loving forever home for a dog or cat, you can give the ultimate gift and adopt!
