Learn about Atlanta’s history while you give the gift of life!

American Red CrossWe at ATLIntownLiving hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas filled with good family memories, delicious food and, of course, lots of presents.  We also hope everyone took some time to think about all we have and hopefully how we can give back in the new year.  But why wait until the new year when you can give back in a big way this very week and explore Atlanta’s rich history at the same time?

December 27, from 11:00am-5:00pm, the Atlanta History Center is hosting a holiday blood drive for the Atlanta American Red Cross.   Giving blood is easy, fast, costs nothing, and could save a life!    Blood can’t be manufactured; it must be donated.  And this time of year, supplies often reach a critical point so donations are especially important. Get Farmers’ Market Fresh, Atlanta!

farmers marketThere’s something special about heading to the local farmer’s market to pick up your fruits and veggies.  Coming face-to-face with the people who nurtured them, seeing the beautiful foods displayed outside of a supermarket setting…  makes you appreciate nature’s amazing process of transforming a tiny seed into a delicious fruit or vegetable.

In Atlanta, there are several places to get your fruits and veggies directly from their growers.  Here are a few of our favorites: Continue reading

Discover Intown One Mile at a Time at the Atlanta Marathon

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just a cardio dilettante, the Atlanta Marathon this Sunday is the perfect opportunity for you to tour intown Atlanta on foot, getting to know our city better. Starting and finishing at Atlantic Station, the Marathon tours 26.2 miles of Atlanta, including Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, Turner Field, Grant Park, Inman Park, Virginia-Highland, Oakland Cemetery, Old Fourth Ward, Piedmont Park, Morningside, and Buckhead. (The full course map is available here.)

Not much of a runner? The Atlanta Marathon team has suggested two of our favorite places to hang out and cheer on the runners.

Oakland Cemetery
Spectators can cheer on runners and walkers as they run past Oakland Cemetery on Memorial Drive, making their way to Mile 9. A Halloween DJ will be near located near Oakland Cemetery, so come on out to cheer on the runners and enjoy some spooky tunes!

Inman Park
Cheer on runners and walkers as they run down N Highland Avenue through the Inman Park neighborhood. This is the the halfway point of the race, so participants will appreciate the encouragement. Inman Park is perfect place to grab brunch at one of the many restaurants with outdoor patios and cheer on the runners as they pass by!

So why not grab a seat this weekend between Halloween festivities at P’Cheen, the newly opened Barcelona Wine Bar, or another of the fine Inman Park restaurants in the Highland Walk and N. Highland Steel strips and cheer on the runners? Or grab a hot chocolate at Marlee’s Coffee and Tea House in the Pencil Factory and head down to one of our favorite Atlanta spots, historic Oakland Cemetery, to do the same?

Are any of our readers running this weekend? Leave notes in the comments section!

Toughen Up and Lean Out at X3 Sports in Inman Park

Summer’s over and shorts are being exchanged for sweaters, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get a head start on getting in shape for next year (or perhaps for a mid-winter vacation). Why not beat the post-holiday rush by starting a new workout program before the New Year?

These days, there are many different options besides the traditional gym. Like candles, gong music, and stretchy pants? You’re probably going to enjoy yoga or pilates. Do you prefer intense, short workouts that make you feel like you’re going to die? CrossFit might be for you. There are dance classes of all types, kettlebell training facilities, even gyms that specialize in spinning. Multitasker? If you want a workout that not only gives you a great body, but that also gives you some valuable life skills in terms of self-defense and confidence, joining a martial arts gym might be the right move for you.

Recently, a friend of mine joined X3 Sports in Inman Park, located in the N. Highland Steel complex of shops and luxury Atlanta apartments. X3 has a traditional gym with weights, machines, and yoga classes on the premises, but the tradition stops there. X3 is known throughout the Southeast for its fantastic martial arts classes for fitness and more intense training. If you just want to get in shape with a bit of an edge, the kickboxing and fitness boxing classes are affordable and effective. But if you’d like to be the next MMA champ (or just look and train like one), their Brazilian Jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, mixed martial arts, and boxing programs have produced some impressive athletes. Classes at X3 can help you reach whatever goals you might have: general health, self-defense, or getting in on the fastest growing sport in the nation.

My friend has started boxing classes at X3 and reports that unlike many gyms focused toward martial arts, they are low on the intimidation factor while still providing a top-quality service. He has reported leaning out and feeling tougher in just a few short weeks, confident to take on anything. I’m tempted to go and and sign up for the Muay Thai classes just to be able to let off a little steam at the end of the day. It looks like a blast.

X3 is super active on Facebook, so check them out there and then head down for a free session in person. Let us know how it goes…we’re pretty excited about trying it out soon!
